Where do stretch marks occur on the body?

Stretch marks can occur anywhere on the body. However they tend to be more common on the abdomen, breasts, upper arms and underarm area, as well as the thighs, buttocks and hips. This is because these are the main areas where fat gets stored.

What causes them?

It is not just the stretching process of the skin that is responsible for stretch marks. Glucocorticoid hormones in the body can prevent the fibroblasts in the skin from forming collagen and in turn this means that the skin is less elastic. As a result, it is not as capable of handling the greater forces of being stretched and the dermis and epidermis layers begin to tear.

Can stretch marks be reversed?

There are a number of treatments that can help to reduce the problem; they range from creams and oils, all the way to laser treatment for stretch marks. Therapie Clinic use micro-needling treatment to stimulate collagen and elastin growth which will help reduce the appearance of stretch marks.

Laser stretch mark removal

One of the newest forms of laser treatment for stretch marks is known as fractional laser resurfacing. Micro-needling for stretch marks

The treatment introduces fine needles into the skin to create microscopic channels. Serums that are applied to the skin afterwards are also up to 1000 more effective as the pores on the skin are opened and the product is absorbed deeper into the skin.

Micro-needling uses a micro-needle roller to painlessly penetrate the epidermis in order to stimulate collagen and elastin growth and to create clear routes to increase absorption of topical serums into the skin.

Laser resurfacing or rejuvenation is carried out by directing a laser onto the affected area of skin. This creates a series of pinpoint micro incisions and is carried out using a fractional laser, which means that only a small portion of the damaged skin is treated at any one time, allowing for quicker healing and less irritation.

The tiny incisions prompt the skin’s natural defences to kick in. This forces the body to create new collagen and begin the process of repairing the damage done by the laser. The skin heals itself and pumps new collagen into areas where it is lacking.

What can skin rejuvenation be used to treat?

Because this type of procedure penetrates deeper into the skin than other cosmetic treatments it can be used on a wide variety of conditions. Sun damaged skin, scars and acne scars, stretch marks, spider veins and actinic keratosis (thick, scaly or crusty patches of skin) can all be treated. Rejuvenation of skin varies from patient to patient and the severity of the initial condition will determine how many treatments will be required.

For the treatment of wrinkles a patient can expect the results to last anywhere from one to three years. Although lasers can be used to deal with fine to medium wrinkles, they cannot totally reverse deep wrinkles. In cases such as these their appearance will be improved, but they will not disappear, as is the case with finer wrinkles.

What are the alternatives?

Dermabrasion is a more aggressive form of treatment than microdermabrasion and is a surgical procedure. There are various ways it can be performed, but the most common include CO2 and modern medical lasers.

Dermabrasion treatment requires a local anaesthetic and the skin will appear red and raw afterwards. This is because the top layers of skin are removed during the process. Healing can take several months and the procedure can be used on fine wrinkles, small scars, moles and tattoos.

Microdermabrasion is much less invasive than dermabrasion. As a result, it can be carried be performed as an in-office treatment or even at home. This treatment uses a mechanical medium to remove the dead surface cells and expose the healthy new skin underneath.

The skin may feel more sensitive after treatment and it is advisable to wear sunscreen when out and about. In most cases the skins heals within one to two days, which is considerably less than the estimated weeks or months for dermabrasion.

Microdermabrasion is used to deal with fine lines and wrinkles, shallow acne scars, hyper pigmentation and sunburn damage. The removal of the dead skins cells aids the absorption of skincare products by up to 50% and will also make applying makeup that much easier.
