What is Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is a darkening of an area of skin, caused by overproduction of melanin (pigment). It’s harmless, but unsightly and very difficult to cover with make-up.

In areas of hyperpigmentation, there is an abnormally high level of melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin, or they are hyperactive.

There are a variety of reasons for this, with overexposure to the sun (causing ‘sun spots’ or ‘liver spots’) being very common, along with hormonal changes; certain medications, inflammation and acne.
